Driving in Spain: Insights from Two Years on the Road

Driving in Spain is an adventure! From roundabouts to mobile phone usage, here are my thoughts after two years on the roads.

I want to share some thoughts on my experiences with Spanish traffic and driving habits after living here for two years.

Coming from the Netherlands, where I once thought driving was a bit chaotic, my perspective has shifted. Surprisingly, Spanish drivers handle themselves quite well—much better than I originally expected!

That said, driving in Spain does come with its own set of quirks. For example, navigating roundabouts is an adventure in itself; it seems like every driver has their unique style! Plus, the use of turn signals is a rarity here—I've jokingly remarked that only the tourists remember to use their indicators.

Speed limits? Now that's an interesting topic. In the Netherlands, drivers strictly adhere to the rules; here in Spain, speed limits often feel like mere suggestions. It’s not uncommon to see drivers whizzing by far too quickly or creeping along without a care in the world. This inconsistency even extends to trucks, where you might see one cruising at 80 km/h while another breezes past at 100 km/h. Quite the sight!

One of my biggest concerns is the frequent use of mobile phones while driving. This is a problem everywhere, but in Spain, it seems even more prevalent. In the Netherlands, hands-free usage is the norm, but here, distracted driving is all too common.

On the brighter side, Spain does have some commendable traffic regulations. Starting in 2026, drivers will need to have an emergency light in their vehicles, enhancing safety and visibility during emergencies. After all, relying on reflective warning signs isn’t always enough!

Also, speeding and phone usage are taken seriously here, with police utilizing patrols, helicopters, and even drones, in addition to standard speed traps and undercover cars. So, keep that in mind as you hit the road!

I really appreciate the rule that requires drivers to maintain a distance of 1.5 meters from cyclists—a fantastic safety measure! And I love the option for drivers to reduce fines for minor offenses by 50% if paid within 20 days; it encourages timely action, but after that, the full fine kicks in.

So, stay alert and safe out there on the roads!

Hasta Luego mis Amigos!
